Day 10
Careful mapping to record the location of all excavation units and archaeological
findings is an essential part of excavation. In
this picture, the archaeologists use surveying tools in mapping
the Arbuckle's Fort site.
Most students of archaeology need to learn standard mapping and photography
skills. On this site, a standard surveying transit is being used to
record location and elevation (or relief) of the site. The resulting
detailed site map can then be used in the analysis phase, and for planning
of future excavations. Modern technology, such as the global positioning
system and laser transits, is making mapping easier.

are archaeologist that are measuring a feature for excavation. The blue
flags signal that evidence of metal in the soil was found using the
metal detector. This feature is thought to be part of the forge, which
is being excavated in
this picture.
