ARBUCKLE'S FORT
THE EXCAVATION: [ OCTOBER 3, 1997]

Day 11

Our next to last day of excavation gave us some interesting artifacts. While many final details are completed such as mapping and measuring, the last searches for artifacts continued. Today we found a buckle and a silver coin.

[photo #1]We believe this coin is a Spanish piece of eight. The name "Philip" clearly appears on the coin. This is the third coin fragment found this week. Maybe on our last day, we'll find a few more.

[photo #2] We also found some interesting button-like pieces of glass. Both were quite small, as can be seen in comparison to the quarter. The top piece is blue and the word "Liberty" appears carved into it. The small clear piece at the bottom is interesting in that it is faceted much like a jewel.

[photo #3]Numerous gun flints were discovered while excavating foundation stones from the fort's cabin. Found near the flints were several pieces of metal, spear points and a lead musket ball.

We complete today's visit with a drawing of the stockade map. Tomorrow is our last day at Arbuckle's Fort. Come back tomorrow to see our final excavation results.
