ARBUCKLE'S FORT
THE EXCAVATION: [ SEPTEMBER 27, 1997]

greenbrier historical society

Day 6

Excavation of the stockade trench continued today. In this picture, the bisected stockade trench continues into the second trench above it. The darker line in the second trench shows how the stockade line ran around the fort. In the picture, a third excavation has begun as we continue the stockade trench.

Part of the work of an archaeologist is the careful examination and measurement of all features found. Dr. Kim McBride measures the stockade line and then records the measurements for later study. These diagrams as seen in the field sketch help the archaeologists understand the fort's structure.

We end the first week of our excavation with the picture of two young and very happy volunteers. The boys, who are assisting the beginning excavation of the cellar site, found their first archaeological discovery - a section of bone. Come back on Monday to see our second week begin!
