Day 7
Our last week of excavation begins at Arbuckle's Fort with a full week
of visits scheduled with schoolchildren from across the West Virginia.
Today's visitors came from Jefferson
Elementary School in Huntington, WV. The students found their first
exposure to archaeology an exciting adventure.
The students from Mrs.
Williams and Ms. Varney's classes travelled over 200 miles to visit
the Arbuckle's Fort site and were welcomed by the entire archaeology
team. They will take back to their classes a new understanding of archaeology
and history. Perhaps one of these students will one day be an archaeologist
hoping to discover past wonders.
A different view of how artifacts look can be seen in
this photo. While excavating along the stockade trench, the team
found this pig jaw. The pig jaw has been partially excavated as shown
in the photograph. The process of removing the jaw without damaging
it is a slow and careful one. Patience is a true hallmark of all students
of archaeology.
Late Saturday afternoon, we found a well shaped spear point in the cellar
area. A spear point such as the one in [photo#1]
would have been placed at the tip of a long, narrow pole and used for
hunting. The spear point predates the historic period.
Visit with us again tomorrow to see what we find!
