ARBUCKLE'S FORT
THE EXCAVATION: [ SEPTEMBER 30, 1997]

Day 8

Today was a day for artifacts. [photo #1 & photo# 2] The first coin ever found at Arbuckle's Fort was discovered protruding from the wall of a feature by young Barbie Dobbins. While only a small fragment, as shown in the photograph above left, the coin is nevertheless an important find at the fort. We believe it to be a Spanish coin, although further study will identify it more clearly.

At the same time that Barbie discovered the coin, her brother Cass found a deer's jaw in the cellar excavation. The partial jaw was one of many bones found in the partially excavated cellar. [photo# 3] Barbie and Cass confer with archaeologist Hunter Lesser about their discoveries.

In this picture is a closer view of a partially excavated bone in the cellar feature. One of five bones partially exposed in the cellar, the bone is well intact and may be deer in nature. We hope that further excavation of the cellar will bring more such artifacts.

Tomorrow the excavation of the stockade feature and the cellar continues. Visit with us then to see our new discoveries.
