In 2002 the Office of the County Clerk of Greenbrier County gathered numerous boxes of documents that were no longer needed and donated these documents to the Greenbrier Historical Society. Discovered among the documents were more than 2,700 marriage bonds, marriage licenses and permission slips dating from late 1700's to late 1800's. Earlier we announced that the initial sort of these documents had been completed. During the recent move from The Barracks back into North House Museum we discovered many boxes of documents, some containing marriage bonds, that had been overlooked. So, the sorting and cataloguing goes on. Note that the abbreviation “"ML"” after a listing indicates a marriage license is available for that couple; “"PS"” indicates that only a permission slip is available. If no abbreviation appears after a name it indicates that a marriage bond is available for that couple but other documents, such as permission slips, may also accompany the marriage bond. The marriage documents found to date have been catalogued and are available for sale by the Greenbrier Historical Society. Cost of the documents are $4.00 for a black & white photocopy ($6.00 non-members) and $8.00 for a color copy of the same document ($10.00 non-member). The documents can be ordered by check or credit cad. Please call the Society at 304.645.3398 and place your order with someone in the Archives or email us. You may also print out and send in an order form to the Society. Please include your membership number with your order so we may be able to ensure your member discount.
