North House Museum The
North House is a circa-1820 historic house museum that has on permanent display various artifacts consisting of decorative arts, furnishings and personal items from the Collection of the Greenbrier
Historical Society. The North House Museum has six period appropriate rooms, a Civil War and frontier room as well as the Doris Caldwell room that houses her dioramas. The North House has something for everyone. Do not miss the opportunity to glimpse Greenbrier Valley life nearly 150 years earlier. Current Exhibit A History of Christmas Exhibit from November 15 through January 15, 2012 A History of Christmas explores the rich and varied history of Christmas in America beginning in 1820 and ending in 1920. Four rooms in the North House Museum represent each time period. The informal living room is the stage of the 1820s Christmas, when there was hardly any celebration at all; however, a plum pudding waits to be eaten on the dining table. The formal parlor hosts the Victorian Christmas, where a tree adorns a tabletop and presents wait to be opened. In the dining room, you will find a Civil War Christmas complete with Confederate flags, displaying Greenbrier County's Southern allegiance, and a stocking on the mantel waiting for Santa Claus. Finally, the exhibit ends where it began in the sun room with a 1920s Christmas, the holiday as we know and love it today. Free admission.
