2021 Journal of the Greenbrier Historical Society Submission Guidelines
The Journal of the Greenbrier Historical Society is an annual publication that showcases the history of the Greenbrier Valley through a series of articles written by historians, members, and community members. We are currently accepting submissions for the 2021 publication. The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2021.
We encourage authors to contact us to discuss ideas for journal articles. We are happy to work with you on formatting, illustration, and other issues as needed. Authors do not have to be a Society member, though we hope you will join us. Editor Dr. W. Stephen McBride can be contacted [email protected] and will answer any of your questions. Please provide your full name and telephone number in any correspondence.

Article Selection
A committee will be in charge of selecting articles that will be included in the annual Greenbrier Historical Society Journal publication. The mission of the Greenbrier Historical Society is to share the diverse history of the Greenbrier Valley. Articles must be related to Greenbrier Valley History (Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Summers, or Monroe County geographic locations). Any article without a strong tie to people, places, or things from the Greenbrier Valley will not be considered. Articles will be accepted based on quality and historic relevance. All articles must be submitted by July 31, 2021 On average 2 long articles and 4-6 short articles are accepted per publication, if your article is not selected for the GHS Journal, you may be contacted about having your article included in our bi-weekly blog post.
In 2022 we are particularly interested in submissions related to Greenbrier Valley businesses, agriculture, and turkey farming history. If you have ideas for articles, historic information, historic photographs, or want to tell your story in the form of an oral history interview please reach out to discuss further. [email protected] or call 304-645-3398.

Length
There are two article lengths that can be submitted. A long article is 2500-4000 words including endnotes and a short article is between 1000-1500 words including endnotes.
We are also looking for:
We are also looking for:
- 1 page spreads that will include a historic business photograph and a 300-500 word description of that business.
- Mini-articles of 300-700 words about the history of turkey farming and turkey drives locally.
Formatting
All text should be prepared in double-spaced typescript and submitted as an electronic version in software such as Microsoft Word or similar. Please add a blank line between paragraphs but otherwise refrain from formatting.
Endnotes should be used for quoted materials and information that is not considered common knowledge. Endnotes numbers (superscript) should appear at the end of sentences, not in mid-sentence. Endnotes should be prepared following Kate L. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers or the more extensive The Chicago Manual of Style (both published by University of Chicago Press). We can help to format your endnotes if needed, but it is the responsibility of authors to provide the sources of their reference material. All source material should appear in the Endnotes, as the Journal does not print a separate Bibliography or List of Sources.

Illustrations
We strongly encourage illustrations, with from four to six illustrations per article as a general target. Number illustrations sequentially, starting as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc, with a callout (Figure 1) placed in the article text to indicate approximate placement of the illustration. Do not distinguish between photographs and line art; all are considered figures. Please provide a list of figure captions and the source of each illustration at the end of your article (following the Endnotes) or in a separate file.
Provide each illustration in a separate attached electronic file (.tiff, .png, or .jpg), NOT embedded in the text. Please submit photographs of a minimum DPI of 300. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions, and for paying any permission, use, or processing fees involved with the illustrations.
We will work with you on figures as needed. For example, an original photograph or art work can be brought in to the North House Museum to be scanned and returned to the author. We may be able to enhance the quality of older photographs, and may be able to search for appropriate illustrations within the extensive photographic and manuscript collections of the North House Museum. Contact [email protected] to request assistance on finding historic images.

Tables
Extensive numerical data is best presented in tables. Tables are numbered separately from figures and each table should have a callout in the text (Table 1), just like the figures. Tables should be placed at the end of the article, OR can be submitted as separate electronic files. Please do NOT embed tables in the body of the text. Please do minimal formatting on tables. Include a table caption above the table and the table source below the table.
Copyright
Articles that are accepted become the property of the Greenbrier Historical Society, which allows authors the free use of their materials as long as a decent interval elapses between publication in the Journal and subsequent publication.
