Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Greenbrier Historical Society. Your contributions of time and talent are essential to our visitor experience. Help us share a passion for history and learning.

Let us know what you would be interested in helping us with and we will find a meaningful way for you to contribute to our organization!

Archives Volunteers: They work closely with our AmeriCorps Member and Jane Hughes, our head archival volunteer. There are many tasks available to work on depending on your interests.
  • Scanning Marriage Bonds
  • Sorting Business files & making folders
  • Separating Courthouse documents
  • PastPerfect Data Entry
  • Typing up transcriptions that have been handwritten
  • Labeling Marriage returns
  • Assisting with answering research requests
  • Collecting articles from newspapers for our subject vertical files
Research/Content Writing: We have many facets of our online presence as well as physical publications. We are looking for people to help us develop content. You can use our collection to write short articles for our blog, quarterly newsletters, social media posts, and possibly our annual Journal publication. Content must be related to the Greenbrier Valley (Monroe, Summers, Pocahontas, Greenbrier Counties) and of course, be fun and interesting!

Construction/Handyman: We are looking for people with building skills. We need some shelving built for our framed art storage. We will also be working on exhibits that will need woodworking assistance and installation. If you like painting, we will be doing that as well. These will be tasks here and there, not regularly scheduled volunteering.

Tours  We offer a number of walking tours around Lewisburg that people schedule through us. We always love having tour guides we can reach out to provide tours to visitors when they book them. We also do training on the North House museum tour if you want to provide visitors with a 45-minute tour of the house and help staff our front desk.

We also have a number of Committees that you can serve on depending on your interest. I have attached those descriptions in a PDF for you to look through. Committees meet generally quarterly or as needed and support the major aspects of the work we do at the museum. Fiscal Committee, Building & Grounds Committee, Archives Committee, Collections Committee, Education Committee.
